New York is the most populous city in the United States and the nucleus of the premier gateway for legal immigration to the United States - the New York metropolitan area, one of the most populous urban agglomerations in the world. The city is referred to as New York City or the City of New York to distinguish it from the State of New York. New York exerts a significant impact upon commerce, finance, media, art, fashion, research, technology, education, and etertainment. The home of the United Nations Headquarters, New York is an important center for international diplomacy and has been described as the cultural and financial center of the world. New York City consist of five boroughs, each of which a county of New York State. The five boroughs are - the Bronx, Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, and Staten Island. The city has an an estimated 2017 population of 8,622,698.

In 2008, the Krippin Virus was engineered by Dr. Alice Krippin in Manhattan, the main borough of New York City, and released as a viral cure for cancer.
The following year, on Christmas Eve, KV mutated into a lethal new strain of measles and began spreading across Manhattan. The borough was qurantined and all bridges and roadways out of the city was lockdown. Citizens including Dr. Robert Neville's family began to evacuate Manhattan through helicopter. In an effort to contain the infected and stop the infection from spreading to the rest of the city and country, the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges were bombarded. The effort failed, however, as the virus went airborne and proceeded to infect the rest of the world.
By 2012, New York had become a decaying ruin, infested with Darkseekers and devoid of any human survivors. Dr. Robert Neville, the last non-infected in Manhattan, spent the previous three years working in his apartment her in search of a cure to the Krippin Virus. He eventually found it, and sacrificed himself so that new arrivals Anna and Ethan could deliver this cure to Bethel, Vermont and restore humanity.
